Teaching APA Style: 7th Edition Template Papers
By: Megan Sumeracki
In 2016, I created a pair of template papers to assist in teaching my students APA style. The templates reflected the 6th edition of the APA manual. APA has since published a 7th edition of the publication manual. So, I updated the template papers to reflect APA 7th edition. I included notes explaining formatting and references, and I wrote the body of the paper to explain each section.
Note, APA now has two separate title page formats: one for students and one for professionals. These templates reflect the format for students. For professional papers, a running head needs to be added (though the first page does not need to say “Running head” anymore… thank goodness!) as well as an author note.
When creating the reference page, you can have Microsoft Word create the hanging first line for you. I explain in the reference section, but below is a screenshot showing you how to do this (taken from my mac).
Happy teaching and happy writing!!
