Weekly Digest #105: Summer Reading Programs

It may be hard to believe, but the end of the school year and the start of summer vacation is right around the corner. Summer break can be great for a lot of things (like relaxing!), but for kids being away from school can be problematic to learning (To read more about these issues, check out this post, and scroll to the section titled "Combatting the Summer Slide".) One way to address this for any child can be summer reading programs! In previous digests, we gathered resources about the importance of reading to children and making the most out of your summer. In this week's digest, we focus on resources about summer reading programs. Here you'll find five resources about the benefit of summer reading programs, how to find summer reading programs, and how to create impactful summer reading programs!

2) 10 Kids Summer Reading Programs We Love by Shellie Deringer, @ShellieDeringer on We Are Teachers, @WeAreTeachers

This resource goes through a number of summer reading programs that can be found in many regions (e.g., Barnes and Noble). They also suggest checking out your public library!

3) Outcomes-Based Summer Reading: Programs, Prizes, and Decorations by the California Library Association (CLA)

In this piece, the CLA talks about out-come based summer reading programs. If you're designing your own summer reading activities, you probably will want to check this out!

4) 7 Adventurous Program Ideas that Complement Summer Reading by Eleanor Diaz, American Library Association Public Programs Office

This article goes one step further, expanding summer reading into summer learning. They provide 7 programs that, in their words, "think outside the book"!

This article is aimed at teachers, and contains a lot of ideas for fun ways to integrate reading and writing into the summer (and some other fun learning opportunities too)!
