Weekly Digest #130: SoTL Researcher Spotlight

In today’s digest, we would like to introduce you to some researcher-educators doing great work in promoting the scholarship of teaching and learning in psychology. For each researcher-educator, we have provided a small biography and links to some of their work so that you can go learn more.

1)      Stephen Chew @SChewPsych

Dr. Stephen Chew conducts research on the use of examples in teaching, the impact of cognitive load on learning, and the tenacious misconceptions that students bring with them into the classroom. He is best known as the creator of a groundbreaking series of YouTube videos for students on how to study effectively in college based on cognitive research. 2)      Regan Gurung @ReganRAGurung

Dr. Regan Gurung conducts health psychological and social psychological research on cultural differences in stress, social support, smoking cessation, body image and impression formation. He has also received numerous teaching awards, organized teaching conferences, and served on many different committees and executive boards with teaching organizations. 3)      Jane Halonen @jhalonen

Dr. Jane Halonen is a psychologist who has dedicated her academic career to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Her academic interests include improving student learning, assessing undergraduate programs, helping good departments become great ones, and helping the public understand the discipline of psychology. 4)      Eric Landrum @ericlandrum

Dr. Eric Landrum conducts research on the educational conditions that best facilitate student success as well as the use of SoTL strategies to advance the efforts of scientist-educators. He has written numerous books and served in numerous roles for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology and the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association. 5)      Katherine Rawson

Dr. Katherine Rawson’s research program explores how to optimize learning in educationally relevant domains, with current emphasis on strategies that promote the durability and efficiency of student learning, and the self-regulatory processes that support such learning.
