Weekly Digest #90: Ways To Keep Kids Engaged With Learning During Winter Break

Time to relax and unwind is important, but the winter break can feel long and maybe you are looking for ways to enrich the winter break with your kids with some learning highlights. In today’s digest, you find five resources on how to keep you and or your kids engaged with learning during the winter break.

1)     The Great Gingerbread Project by by Jeannie Curtis

This is a fun activity that combines a holiday favorite, gingerbread houses, with math. It is targeted to 4th year pupils and a step-by-step instruction is given.

2)     15 Fun STEM Things To Do Over Winter Break by Kiri

This wonderful resource lists 15 different STEM activities that you can do at home with kids of different ages (up to 18 years old). Fun for the entire family and at the same time getting a deeper understanding of physics and chemistry. This is brilliant elaboration right there.

3)      Five Fun Winter Break Activities That Won't Feel Like Homework by Samantha DiMauro, Education World Contributor

Some more activities that combine learning and fun. We particularly like the idea of having kids read a book of their choice and create a poster that summarizes the most important parts. This can be done using lots of dual coding. Nice.

Many of the resources so far mention reading as a go-to activity during the winter break and we have written about the importance and benefits of reading before. For that reason, this article highlights a couple more reading and writing activities for children.

5)      This Is The Winter Mini Challenge You're Looking For! by Summer Reading Challenge

To further motivate kids to read: There is currently a Winter Mini Reading Challenge going on. It started on Dec 11 and ends on Jan 12, 2018. Kids can choose the books they want and the rewards are Star Wars-themed. What are your waiting for? Start reading and may the force be with you.
